£200 This versatile multifunction inkjet gives you a little more than the average printer.

HP’s Officejet range is built for speed, and this Officejet Pro 8500A Plus is no exception. Our 20-page black-and-white test document, designed to reflect real-world use rather than to flatter printer speeds, was output in one minute, 30 seconds. A top-quality A4 photo print took just four minutes, 35 seconds, another respectable time. If you print a lot of large documents, or need to share it with others who use it regularly (perhaps in a small office), an Officejet is ideal.

Thankfully, there’s no trade-off between speed and quality. Text printing is solid and clear, with no bleeding or misaligned characters, and quality image prints on photo paper give vibrant colours and accurate flesh tones. Default quality photo prints on ordinary paper are a little subdued and banded.

As well as connecting to your local network through WiFi ‘n’ or Ethernet, the Officejet Pro 8500A Plus offers another, more innovative way to share. HP’s ePrint technology lets you to print from any email-capable device by sending a compatible document or image to your printer’s unique email address. It’s very useful for house guests or visitors to your office. Compatible documents include PDFs, Microsoft Word and Powerpoint files, plain text and images saved as JPG, TIFF, BMP, PNG and GIF. It’s fairly painless to set up, and works very well. USB 2.0 connectivity is also available, if you just want to connect to your Mac.

The Officejet Pro 8500A Plus isn’t the cheapest inkjet, but quality is high and given its feature set, it’s not overpriced.
