Google TV box flops for Logitech

Logitech has been forced to slash the price of its Google TV set-top box, Revue, by more than half, after more were returned to stores in the first quarter of the year than were sold.

The box, which allows web surfing in the living room, now costs just $99 in the United States, down from $249.

The new price point is less then the Revue costs Logitech to make, so it told investors it faces a $34m write-off as a result.

The firm said the price cut will “remove price as barrier to broad consumer acceptance”. It is also pinning hopes on a software update later this year that will give Google TV devices access to apps from the Android Marketplace.

“We launched Revue with the expectation that it would generate significant sales growth in spite of a relatively high price point and the newness of both the smart TV category and the underlying platform,” said Guerrino De Luca, the chairman of Logitech, in a conference call on Thursday.

“In hindsight, there are number of things we should have done differently.”
